June 26, 2012

First off, I am feeling much better. My throat is finally feeling back to normal and I can eat spicy things without wanting to rip out my throat from pain. Francis and William are healed as well. It's so nice to have a healthy house!

Francis's dad came down for a day to take care of William while I healed. It was so sweet. Thanks to "Grandad", William had  his inaugural trip to Fry's electronics. Years from now we may look back on that day as the day William's inner nerd was born.

William has been making lots of developmental progress. He actually respects and understands the word no. It's not 100% of the time, and sometimes he gets mad, but he generally stops when I use my good teacher voice. William is also beginning to initiate play. I was playing with one toy the other day when William went over to a toy, turned it on and started putting the cars on the track for them to spin (it was a race track). Then he looked at me an offered me a car. It was adorable!

William must be going through another growth spurt. I can't get enough food in him. He is eating baby food in addition to whatever we are eating. Today for lunch he had a serving of baby food, a granola bar, and a full adult serving of rice and beans (I was eating a burrito). He was still hungry! I couldn't believe it.

William's newest word is "Nana". He is referring to bananas, but I am sure the word will quickly translate when he sees my sweet mother-in-law again!

Finally, William has been standing for extended periods of time. He only sits down when he notices that nothing is holding him up. It's a bit like looking at a cartoon character. He is also starting to walk a lot more. His record number of steps is 4! Soon he will be walking all over. I'm excited and scared at the same time!

We had Francis's make-up Father's Day this past weekend. It went pretty well.  We gave him breakfast in bed and he finally got to go and see Avengers with a friend. We are so thankful for him. It is so nice when we can show it.

That's where I will leave this entry. Bubba (William) is trying to climb onto the TV upstairs and I should probably stop him before he succeeds!!!

June 19, 2012

I will make this brief as all I really want to do is lie down. William had fun at swimming lessons last week. He finished like a trooper and learned all kinds of new skills. Wednesday we went to swimming lessons, then to a huge splash pad and then straight to the Little Gym for practice. Amazingly, William never got tired. He has an endless amount of energy!

Friday morning I took William to the doctor only to find out he has Hand, Foot and Mouth disease. Not cool. He has sores all over his body and is pretty unhappy even now that he is starting to recover. This put us out of commission for helping at VBS this week because he is contagious.

My parents came into town Friday afternoon even though William was sick. We all had a lovely time together. I always enjoy spending time with my family. They even bought him his birthday present a little early so he could start enjoying it now: a water table. It is kinda hot outside so we set it up in the dining room on the tile with a tarp underneath it. It has proved to to provide hours of fun already!

As soon as my parents left Saturday evening, I could tell something was wrong. I quickly deteriorated throughout Sunday and ended up in urgent care Sunday night with a 104.1 fever. They couldn't figure out what was wrong with me and wanted to transfer me to the ER, but I declined. After being there 2 hours, I figured I could be just as miserable in my own bed as a hospital one. They doped me up on meds and released me. It made for a poor Father's Day for Francis. The only bright spot for him was his present from William. It was a board book called "I love my Daddy" and included pictures of him and William doing things together with words and captions. It nearly made him cry. Since the rest of the day was kind of a let down, we are going to have a redo next weekend.

I still feel pretty crummy. Turns out I caught what William has even though I thought I had it as a child and should be immune. But I found a couple of sores identical to William's on the back of my throat yesterday so I have no doubt as to my ailment. Francis came down with it yesterday evening and now is deep in the throes of fever induced delirium. He has taken every kind of medication available to him and is napping now. Please pray we all heal soon.

I know I have forgotten something, but I just want to sleep so I will leave this entry sadly incomplete. Perhaps next week I can include whatever I have missed.

June 11, 2012

Could not wait to write today. I am actually writing while William is helping himself to his lunch. It is one of the advantages of his new found independence. He doesn't have to wait on me. I can just put food on his tray and he can go to town. But this is not why I write. The biggest news this week is: WILLIAM TOOK HIS FIRST STEP!!!  Ok, since that only happened yesterday, I will try to tell things in order so that I don't forget anything.

First off, William has been taking swim lessons both last and this week. He is becoming a regular little fish! His biggest accomplishment has been to learn to hold his breath under water. He doesn't like it, but he'll do it. He and his friends Lilly and Ellie from church are all learning a lot. I am so glad we are doing it.

William has 12 teeth as of yesterday. He got the top right molar on Tuesday and the bottom right molar yesterday. I can't believe it!!! Have you ever heard of a child with 12 teeth before they turned 10 months???

William's hair is famous. At The Little Gym on Wednesday we saw a little boy that we've only seen once before. He was with his mom before and this time he was with his grandmother. His grandmother came up and said, "Is this William? Is this the hair I've heard so much about? My daughter can't stop talking about how adorable his hair is. I can see what she means!" I was taken aback. How do you respond to that? Then, in Walmart the following day, every person I passed in the store said something about how cute William is. One big burly man looked at me with a big grin and said, "Love his hair!" It was so bizarre, but I managed a thank you before he finished passing. The same thing happened at church on Sunday. Many strangers stopped to talk to him (not me, mind you) and tell him he was adorable. One woman stopped me and said, "Is this the cutie that was on the buggie ride an hour ago? He is the cutest little boy! His hair is amazing!" Lol, people need to be careful or William is gonna get a big head with all these compliments. My ego has already grown three sizes by proxy!!!

Friday Francis had a half day off. We went to a local splash pad, and William and Francis had a ball. Francis said he was giving William lesson's in hydrodynamics, and William enjoyed ever spray and splash of it. He walked around holding on to one of Francis's hands, leaving the other free to enjoy the water. It was so cute!

Ok, and now the moment you've all been waiting for. The first step. I will back up by saying that earlier this week William had taken a step in the bathtub and two at the Little Gym, but each time his hand or fingers brushed up against something so I was reluctant to count it even though the wall did nothing to help him. Ok, so Sunday morning we were getting ready for church. William and I were playing upstairs when I discovered William's new tooth. I called to Francis and he came into the main room. He made a fun face at which William laughed and giggled. I picked up two rings (two of his bathtub toys) and held them out to him to grab on. Then I helped him stand up. It helped him walked toward Francis with the rings in between our hands such that they were not touching. Then I jokingly said, "Look Francis, he's going to walk to you!" I let go of the rings and to my astonishment, William walked one, two, almost three whole steps into Francis's waiting arms. I think he thought I was still holding onto the rings because he never looked back. Anyway, I squealed with delight and Francis got excited. Poor William must have thought he did something wrong at first because his face got all sad and squished, but a happy dance of jumping and hugging and good job-bing soon remedied that situation. Francis and I both cried from delight. It was so special: one of the best days ever.

Well I can't top that by writing anything else so I will close for the week by saying that William is 10 months old today. I never would have guessed he would have 12 teeth, at least 4 words and be walking at this age. He never ceases to surprise me! Yipee!

June 4, 2012

10 teeth! I can't believe it. William now has 10 teeth. He got a bottom left molar on Thursday morning and the top left molar yesterday evening. I knew he was drooling a lot, but goodness! Now he can mash food even more efficiently than before. He likes having that ability. Pretty soon he will be able to eat steak!

Speaking of eating, Mr. William has been eating everything in sight! He haws three meals a day of at least 8 ounces of food along with two snacks and nursing. He wants whatever I am eating. He even steals food when he thinks he can get away with it. The grass is always greener on someone else's plate!

My little man is so active! He climbed the pantry shelves this week. Didn't know he could do that. He got his knee up on the first shelf and his hands on the third before I grabbed him. I did get a picture though. I couldn't resist. I guess it is just one more thing I will have to keep an eye on! William is also enjoying standing all the time. He stood the entire time in the grocery cart at both Walmart and HEB this week. It was very impressive, but made grocery shopping difficult because I had to place items in such a way that they wouldn't fall on him as we went along.

Another impressive and necessary skill that William has aquired is ducking his head. He has a fewer bruises on his head this week because he lowers his head to get under low objects (such as the kitchen table) instead of plowing straight into them. A great development for me is that I can now say "on your back" and William will wait on his back while I change his diaper. After rolling off the changing pad once and almost rolling off countless other times, I am so glad he is cooperative. It was getting nearly impossible to change him!

I haven't talked about his walking recently. He is still trying to walk, but hasn't quite mastered the coordination. He puts one hand in the wall and stands up. Then he steps away from the wall into the room. That's as far as he gets before sitting. Any time now!!!

We went to Barton Springs on Saturday, a cold natural spring/pool in Austin. It was very cold, but William had a ball. The best part was that it was free! For some reason when we went to pay, they said everyone gets in free. No idea why, but I am not complaining.

Finally, today was a big day. It was William's first swimming lesson. He went with Lilly and Ellie (as well as their moms) to Round Rock for mommy and me lessons. It was fun! William worked on floating and being comfortable in the water. He's a little fish. Then we went straight to our last bugs class at The Little Gym. William has graduated to the Birds class! He's getting so big. Well after swimming and gym class, William passed out and that is where we are now. He's been sleeping for more than an hour. I should do this every day!

That's it for now!
